Part 11: Freelancer’s Mindset

January 24th, 2009 No comments

Everyone has skeletons in the box.  Divorce, bankruptcy, foreclosure, or tremendous losses of great significance.  So what?  You are not alone.  Take a deep breath and know that you will have to experience life’s difficulties just like everyone else.  Those challenges are designed to make you stronger as a way to prove how bad you really want something.  Put past bads behind you and move on!

Do You Know the Common Denominator Between 90% of the World’s Millionaires?

They have all experienced great difficulty and come out on top.  They have had a divorce, bankruptcy or have been at the bottom of the barrel.  Some of them could be just like you.  There are millionaires who were once homeless or who grew up in impoverished families.  They lived on the streets or they spent time in jail.  They were parents who went through teenage pregnancy or who ran away from home.  However, the one thing all of these millionaires share is that they didn’t let life’s punches knock them down.  They got back up and achieved great success despite many adversities.  You can be one in that ninetieth percentile if you set your mind and resilient will to do it.  Don’t limit your ideas and dreams based on negativity of anyone or the world around you.  Stand up and face those challenges head on.  Maintain your belief in yourself no matter how hard it may be sometimes.

For a whole year when I first started my business, the only groceries I had in my house were a gallon of milk, a few boxes of Tuna Helper, cereal and a few random vegetables.  It was embarrassing when company came over, so I didn’t invite people over very often.  Occasionally I splurged.  About once a month (if I had enough cash flow), I went to dinner with a few friends.  It gave the impression that I was doing well.  No one except my immediate family knew of just how hard I struggled that first year.

You need to do to develop the right mindset to make your Freelance business successful.  NEVER, EVER tell anyone how bad it truly is.  ALWAYS talk about how good it is! If someone says, “How’s it going with your new business?”  You are to always say “Great, Awesome, Stellar, Superb” or any of your favorite words for fantastic.

There are two reasons for this.  One – you will create more success because people are far more likely to buy from someone they view as doing well.  “This Freelancer must be really good because he/she is really busy.  I am lucky that I found this Freelancer!” Even if you must stretch the truth at first you will attract more business.  Trust me, this works.  Soon you will not be lying anymore and you will be genuinely successful.  The second reason you want to create the image of success – is because it will motivate YOU.  It will light a fire under your ass.  (That’s not really a swear word anymore these days, is it?)

What you are doing in essence, is talking yourself into your own success.  Think about it.  If you’re down in the dumps and complaining about having no money or no customers, then you will be creating a feeling of fear for yourself and a real depressing attitude.  A depressing attitude will definitely affect your business.  Your spirit will be one of desperation and negativity.  I am reminded of a cool story I read in a book by Eckhart Tolle – “The Power of Now:  A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” – *

FOOD FOR THOUGHT – WHAT COULD YOU BE SITTING ON?

The point to this story is that your Freelance business could be a box full of riches!  If you’re just sitting there expecting it to be empty then you will never be more than like the beggar sitting on his empty box, looking for a handout.  Open up your box and find out what is inside.  There may be a wealth of clients, riches and success beyond your wildest imagination.  Since you’re just starting out on this Freelance venture, your box may very well be quite empty for the time being.  Picture your business to be full of gold at all times.

Many people can give you advice.  It’s good to collect as much good information as possible, but in the end it will be you who determines whether your business will be a success or failure.  Always keep a positive spirit and know that achievement truly is right around the corner for you.  Your belief in your Freelancing venture must be rock-solid and you must be ready to ride the ups and downs of self-employment.  Most of the time, the pros will far outweigh the cons. Have no fear, my dear.

A beggar had been sitting by the side of the road for over thirty years.  One day a stranger walked by.

“Spare some change?” mumbled the beggar, mechanically holding out his baseball cap.

“I have nothing to give you,” said the stranger.  Then he added, “What’s that you are sitting on?”

“Nothing,” replied the beggar, “Just an old box. I have been sitting on it for as long as I can remember.”

“Ever look inside?” asked the stranger.

“What’s the point? There’s nothing in there.”

“Have a look inside,” insisted the stranger.   The beggar managed to pry open the lid.  With astonishment, disbelief, and elation, he saw the box was filled with gold.
